02-24-2022
(subtitle) Hello, I’m Jason from the USA
(subtitle) Cholesterol doesn’t have any symptoms
(subtitle) Now I’m here at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital
(subtitle) The reason why I’m here is learn more about diseases and preventative measures concerning our most important organ, the heart
(subtitle) So if you’re interested in knowing what the top cardiologists of Korea have to say about our heart, come join us
(subtitle) If you have high cholesterol in your blood
(subtitle) Your doctor may say you have very high cholesterol level in your body
(subtitle) But you’ll never feel anything
(subtitle) So you may think it’s not very important
(subtitle) However, it’s the most critical modifiable risk factors for heart attack
(subtitle) If you have high cholesterol level
(subtitle) it’s actually building block for your heart vessels to narrow
(subtitle) Hi, I’m Jason
(subtitle) Hey Jason, welcome to our hospital
(subtitle) So I really recommend you to control your cholesterol level if possible
(subtitle) I’m doctor Kang, in interventional of cardiologist
(subtitle) I’m Wonjae Lee, and I’m also interventional cardiologist
(subtitle) I’m working here in Seoul National University Bundang Hospital
(subtitle) Well, thank you for inviting me
(subtitle) This is a very lovely hospital
(subtitle) A lot of people too
(subtitle) It’s so busy here
(subtitle) Right hahaha
(subtitle) Do you know why I’m here today?
(subtitle) Of course, you want to know more about heart diseases, right?
(subtitle) That’s right
(subtitle) The heart is the most important organ in our body, right?
(subtitle) I feel embarrassed to say this
(subtitle) I don’t know as much as I feel like I should about it
(subtitle) I feel like I’ve been ignoring my heart and
(subtitle) Everything about it
(subtitle) So I want to know more about the diseases and
(subtitle) preventative measures that we can take
(subtitle) to make it last longer and stay healthier
(subtitle) Can you tell me some more about those?
(subtitle) You’re just in the right place
(subtitle) Before getting started, let me give you a question
(subtitle) Do you know what the No.1 cause of death worldwide?
(subtitle) Car accidents
(subtitle) According to the WHO, World Health Organization
(subtitle) Ischaemic heart disease is the No.1 cause of death
(subtitle) Regardless of where you live or
(subtitle) which sex do you have, man or woman
(subtitle) Cardiovascular diseases are the No.1 cause of death
(subtitle) It means it is prevalent, it is frequent, and
(subtitle) it is associated with high risk of mortality
(subtitle) That’s scary
(subtitle) That’s really scary
(subtitle) So we’re in agreement that heart diseases are very scary and very common
(subtitle) I feel like I should know more about it
(subtitle) So could you tell me some more common diseases concerning the heart?
(subtitle) I think you may have heard about angina
(subtitle) Myocardial infarction
(subtitle) Maybe heart attack will be an easier word, right?
(subtitle) So there are two representative diseases
(subtitle) One is angina, and it’s more a chronic disease
(subtitle) Myocardial infarction, heart attack, is more an acute disease
(subtitle) When you get older, you smoke, you have diabetes and hypertension
(subtitle) Your coronary vessel, which is a heart vessel
(subtitle) gets narrower and narrower and
(subtitle) you develop the symptoms like chest pain when you walk and exercise
(subtitle) On the other hand, myocardial infarction is rather acute
(subtitle) You may not have any symptoms yesterday or an hour ago
(subtitle) You may suddenly develop very heavy tightness in your chest
(subtitle) It’s because it blocks the heart completely
(subtitle) This is really, really dangerous when you have these symptoms
(subtitle) You have to come to hospital right away
(subtitle) That’s scary
(subtitle) You two do a great job scaring me today!
(subtitle) Well, I feel like this is a scary subject that we should all know about it
(subtitle) I feel really bad because I haven’t really studied it at all
(subtitle) I don’t know much about it
(subtitle) So I have to reflect on it
(subtitle) Reflect about my past
(subtitle) Usually older people are more concerned about it
(subtitle) Younger people think it’s these are older people
(subtitle) So not many people know much about these diseases
(subtitle) I feel like I’m not young anymore, and I’m not old yet
(subtitle) But when I was younger, of course we all have the feeling
(subtitle) I’m going to live forever, no problem
(subtitle) But they are kind of worried cardiovascular diseases already, right?
(subtitle) Why don’t we start of talking warning signs and symptoms
(subtitle) Okay, what are some warning signs and symptoms about the heart diseases?
(subtitle) It’s different from people to people
(subtitle) Every person has a different body and different nerve endings
(subtitle) Typical symptom is chest pain
(subtitle) When you exert yourself,
(subtitle) When you exercise, when you load your heart
(subtitle) The demand for oxygen and nutrition is increased
(subtitle) But the narrowing of the vessel cannot demand for the heart muscles
(subtitle) So when you exert yourself
(subtitle) Your heart is in need of oxygen and it feels pain
(subtitle) So if you try to catch your child or walk upstairs
(subtitle) You can develop chest pain and feels like heaviness, tightness or a dull ache
(subtitle) Some people sit down and hold their chest
(subtitle) They need to take a rest
(subtitle) When you take a rest and the exertion is lifted
(subtitle) Usually the pain goes away within 5 minutes
(subtitle) Myocardial infarction is a different disease
(subtitle) The pain you haven't had it before
(subtitle) It is usually acute as Dr. Lee said
(subtitle) You haven't had that kind of chest pain
(subtitle) But suddenly in the morning, you have that kind of chest pain
(subtitle) It's really bad, it's really really bad
(subtitle) It goes longer, it usually more than minutes and more than hours
(subtitle) Are there any other symptoms besides that?
(subtitle) As Dr. Kang mentioned, chest pain is the most typical symptom
(subtitle) However, there are other warning signs and other symptoms
(subtitle) that may indicate angina or myocardial infarction
(subtitle) People always think that heart is in the left side
(subtitle) When they have left chest pain
(subtitle) They think “Oh, it maybe because of heart problems”
(subtitle) But actually the heart is right here
(subtitle) It's rather in the left but still somewhere in the middle of your chest
(subtitle) So people may present with abdominal pain as well
(subtitle) Sometimes pain here or maybe sometimes radiating pain to arm and jaw
(subtitle) It's not really just chest pain that people present with
(subtitle) The other symptoms is heartburn
(subtitle) They think it's heartburn but sometimes it's also a symptom of a heart disease
(subtitle) When you feel the symptoms not just comes and goes, kind of persist
(subtitle) You should think about heart as well
(subtitle) Women tend to have more atypical symptoms
(subtitle) When we exercise or we lift heavy things
(subtitle) We may develop chest pain more certain
(subtitle) It's because of the heart
(subtitle) But women may have indigestion, some discomfort, or it's related to whether exercise or not
(subtitle) But it still also can be warning signs
(subtitle) So I feel like the women symptoms are not as severe
(subtitle) Is this true? It’s like lessened?
(subtitle) They may feel not a typical symptom
(subtitle) Not just chest pain, they may feel tired or drained
(subtitle) When they go up there one stair
(subtitle) I wouldn’t say the severity is less but it presents with more diverse features
(subtitle) It’s just different, okay, I got you
(subtitle) Sometimes people think it's just stomach or it’s just because of stress
(subtitle) But it may a sign that saying something bad is going on in their body
(subtitle) You are usually more concerned when you have those kinds of chest discomfort
(subtitle) When you are sweating, have nausea or something like these kind of symptoms
(subtitle) Then you should be more worried about heart diseases
(subtitle) This is really good to know
(subtitle) I had no idea about the differences between males and females
(subtitle) I have a wife and I know what to look for
(subtitle) if she is feeling this kind of discomforts or atypical signs
(subtitle) Now I know hey maybe it's not hard too
(subtitle) I remember learning heart attack, left side, left arm, that's all I knew
(subtitle) I didn't know about the jaw, or over here or in the stomach
(subtitle) So this is very good news
(subtitle) Not only women but also the elderly and people with diabetes
(subtitle) They also have atypical symptoms
(subtitle) Thank you for teaching me all these new things
(subtitle) Thanks to Dr. Lee and Dr. Kang, I'm learning a lot about the heart
(subtitle) I'm becoming more and more worried about my heart
(subtitle) But fortunately there are some preventative measures you can take
(subtitle) to keep your heart healthy
(subtitle) Can you tell me more about those?
(subtitle) There are a lot of measures you can do to prevent cardiovascular diseases
(subtitle) When you get older, you have a higher risk for cardiovascular diseases
(subtitle)Some people have genetic acceptability for cardiovascular diseases
(subtitle)But those kinds of risk factors that you have no control over them
(subtitle)There are many risk factors that you can modify
(subtitle)Modifiable risk factors include
(subtitle)high blood pressure, high sugar, high blood cholesterol, and smoking
(subtitle)You can control them to prevent cardiovascular diseases
(subtitle)Blood pressure should be lower than 140 and 90, and ideally 130 and 80
(subtitle)Blood cholesterol, total cholesterol under 200, and bad or LDL cholesterol 100 or 130
(subtitle)according to your risk profiles
(subtitle)Blood glucose under 100
(subtitle)Smoking is a terrible habit
(subtitle)Just quit smoking and you cut your cardiovascular risk by a half
(subtitle)Holy cow, wow
(subtitle)For exercise, 30 min a day and 5 times a week really helps
(subtitle)Cardio exercise and aerobic exercise that make you sweat nicely and happily
(subtitle)It really helps, and it reduces your cardio vascular risks tremendously
(subtitle)We just learned so much great information about the heart
(subtitle)by Dr. Kang and Dr. Lee
(subtitle)I learned so much and I had a great time
(subtitle)I hope you guys did that too
(subtitle)I want to thank you so much for letting me come here
(subtitle)Thank you Jason, and thank you for coming here
(subtitle)It was really fun for us to chat with you
(subtitle)Yeah, same here, I hope we can have
(subtitle)this kind of opportunity again to talk about diseases
(subtitle)Sure, I’ll come next week!
(subtitle)Before we go, do you have anything else you want to say to our viewers?
(subtitle)I’d like to underline the importance of early and regular screening
(subtitle)If you go and see your doctors regularly
(subtitle)you can pick up your risk factors and
(subtitle)have a higher chance to control them
(subtitle)blood pressure, full or profiled lipid abnormalities
(subtitle)Control your stress and exercise!
(subtitle)Have a happy and healthy day!
(subtitle)Bye~
