Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) is a method used during in vitro fertilization (IVF) to diagnose genetic disorders or chromosomal abnormalities in embryos before implantation. It involves the selection and transfer of only genetically normal embryos, aiming to facilitate a successful pregnancy with a low risk of genetic abnormalities. Preimplantation genetic testing can be categorized into three types:

      1. Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A): This test is performed when there is a higher risk of chromosomal abnormalities in embryos, even if the parents do not have known chromosomal disorders. It is commonly recommended for women of advanced maternal age, those with recurrent miscarriages or implantation failures, couples with male factor infertility, or those with a history of pregnancies with chromosomal abnormalities. 2. Preimplantation genetic testing for structural rearrangements (PGT-SR): This test is conducted to screen for structural abnormalities in chromosomes that may lead to recurrent miscarriages or the birth of a child with birth defects. It is particularly relevant for couples who have experienced recurrent pregnancy loss or male partners with infertility issues, as structural rearrangements are more commonly found in these cases.

      3. Preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic disorders (PGT-M): This test is performed when there is a known single-gene disorder or specific genetic mutation in the family. It involves genetic or chromosomal testing to accurately diagnose the presence of the mutation. Family history and genetic information of family members are often considered in this type of testing. However, it is important to note that technical limitations and the issue of mosaicism in cells can result in false positive or false negative results. Therefore, if pregnancy is achieved, further confirmatory testing such as amniocentesis should be carried out to accurately assess the presence of genetic abnormalities in the fetus.
