As the first Western-style hospital in Korea, and with a 140-year history, Severance Hospital
(Gwanghyewon) has been leading the medical industry in Korea since its foundation in 1885.

[Yonsei Cancer Center – Heavy Ion Therapy Center]
Yonsei Cancer Center opened Korea’s first Heavy Ion Therapy Center (7 floors above ground, 5 floors below ground) in 2023. The Heavy Ion Therapy Center is the only facility in the world equipped with two rotary gantries, as well as one fixed-beam treatment room and two rotating gantry beam treatment rooms. The hospital plans to gradually expand the range of cancers treated, starting with prostate, liver, pancreatic, and lung cancers.
*What is Carbon Ion Therapy?
Carbon Ion Therapy is a cutting-edge form of radiotherapy that destroys cancer cells using carbon ion particles. The Bragg peak allows carbon ions to precisely target tumor tissue.
The number of treatments varies depending on the type of cancer, but it is a highly convenient treatment for patients as it does not require hospitalization and has fewer side effects. It is known to provide a higher therapeutic effect compared to traditional X-ray and proton therapies.
